Born into a household of brilliant musicians, Inayat literally was bathed in music. His Grandfather Maulabakhsh took him under his wing and together they sought out the company of dervishes and fakirs. Inayat was awarded a full scholarship by the Maharajah to his Grandfather's music school, He regularly took first place at all of the recitals, wrote songs, and formed a debating society to spotlight the issues of the day.

But realizing the power of God in his life, he longed for something more . He searched for and met his spiritual master, Abu Hashim Madani.

He continued to give concerts and returned for a visit to Baroda on the tenth anniversary of his grandfather's passing. He returned to Moinuddin Chishti's dargah in Ajmer and was transfixed by the dervishes he encountered there. He then returned to Hyderabad where his aged murshid foretold the day of his death. Inayat had received the highest musical honor from the Nizam of Hyderabad. He had met and studied for almost four years at the feet of his spiritual master Abu Hashim Madani. Once again his heart was broken. His murshid had come to the end of his allotted days. The palace and the poets no longer attracted him. He headed southwest.
Final Episode. Traveling to Sri Lanka, Burma, and settling in Kolkata for a while on advise of his father to settle down somewhere, Inayat still remained on the move, and with the death of his father, he left his 15 year old brother in the care of the auntie-landlady, he accepted an invitation to travel to New York. He invited his brother Mahbood, and cousin Mohammed Ali to accompany him on a concert tour to the West, where continued to travel for the next 16 years, tuning souls instead of musical instruments.
